They work by predicting what words are most likely to come next, drawing on an extraordinary amount of training data to make that judgement feel fluent and intuitive.


I’ve found they’re most useful for taking the heavy lifting out of day-to-day writing tasks. For example:


  • Drafting or refining emails

  • Putting together client proposals

  • Shaping rough notes into clear, polished documents

  • Summarising long meetings or interviews into concise takeaways


There are plenty of tools that make this easy to put into practice. ChatGPT is brilliant for quick replies, summaries, and idea generation. Notion AI integrates neatly into a workspace for in-line writing support, while Copy.ai focuses more on marketing content and ad copy automation.


The real takeaway is this: large language models save time and can raise the quality bar for first drafts, but they do have a subtle influence on tone and phrasing. I always recommend keeping a human layer in the process — that final review ensures everything still sounds authentic, personal, and true to the brand voice.


2. Recommendation Systems: Prioritising What Matters


A recommendation system (or recommender system) is an AI technology that analyses data about your behaviour, preferences, and context to predict what you’re most likely to need or want next. It feels otherworldly when you consider something monitoring everything you are doing to compile data, but if we are being honest with one another… this has been the case for over a decade. Your watch, your phone, your laptops and all of your external connected devices are, in some way, shape or form, tracking you.


At its core, it’s designed to filter and prioritise information in a way that feels almost personal. Instead of you manually sorting tasks, choosing products, or deciding what to read next, the system studies your patterns and makes suggestions on your behalf. The below, for example, are using these systems already:

  • On Netflix, it recommends films based on what you’ve watched.

  • On Spotify, it curates playlists that match your listening habits.

  • In productivity apps like Motion or ClickUp, it decides which tasks deserve your attention first.


Insight: This AI type can guide productivity but may also nudge users toward system-defined goals rather than personal or business priorities. Just being aware is key.


Technically speaking, these do not yet need significant AI models to programme, but soon they almost certainly will! Currently these systems rely on algorithms that combine several inputs (your activity history, urgency levels, what similar users have done, and even the time of day) to create ranked suggestions that feel timely and relevant… But soon… expect Netflix to read exactly what you want, from the type of day you have had to putting on interactive headsets to be in the film. The world as we know it is going to get strange… and fast.


In short, a recommendation system acts as a personalised filter that helps you focus on what matters most, though it’s worth remembering that it can also subtly shape your decisions by steering you toward what it believes is important. Try to avoid this to make sure you don't become the product! Utilised properly, these applications can be incredibly helpful… just be conscious of dependence.


3. Natural Language Processing (NLP): From Voice to Action


Language is one of the most human things we have. The way we express ideas, share emotions, or even delegate a task with a few spoken words, it’s what connects us. So it’s no surprise that one of the most fascinating branches of artificial intelligence focuses on language itself. That’s where Natural Language Processing, or NLP, comes in.


NLP is the technology that helps machines make sense of our words — not just recognising what we say, but interpreting what we mean. It’s how AI learns to listen, read, and respond with surprising fluency. Think of it as the bridge between human expression and machine action.

Knowing where those conversations are stored and how they’re processed matters more than ever.


At its best, NLP doesn’t replace human communication; it enhances it. It helps us work smarter, connect faster, and focus on the parts of conversation that matter most — the meaning behind the words.

Rather than simply analysing or predicting, this branch of AI learns from patterns in its training data to produce entirely new content, content that often looks and sounds convincingly human.
